Does a Family Member or Friend Make a Good Caregiver?
You may wonder if a friend or family member could serve as your caregiver. Family members and friends can make good caregivers.
If you are choosing a family member or friend, choose someone that is: naturally caring, responsible, patient, and someone that can be counted on to be there with you around-the-clock and into the late night for anywhere from 24 to 72 hours without getting too much sleep.
This caregiver needs to have a good bedside manner and ability to remain cheerful and calm even if the patient becomes irritable, emotional and depressed (these are normal and can happen to many patients).
Patients choose to hire a professional care specialist instead of depending on family members or friends because they prefer to have a person with experience that has a good bedside manner and patience as well as experience in treating your condition.
As you know, family members and friends love you and can be well meaning but they simply do not have the proper training to care for your specific needs after a surgical procedure.
